The upright is the primary component of any pallet racking system. Today we’re talking about the standard (or most common) upright sizes. The most common upright depth (front-to-back) is 42”, while 36” and 48” deep uprights are also standard sizes. Uprights come in a much greater variety of heights. The common height range is 8’ to 24’. Steel gauge is the thickness of the steel of the uprights. The lower the number, the thicker the steel.The thicker the steel, the more weight capacity the rack will have. 11 gauge steel racks are pretty universally considered the gold standard when it comes to steel gauge. 12 is acceptable in my opinion, but anything thinner than that starts to become a red flag for me. Each of these ISO-recognized standard pallet dimensions is to some extent adapted to its region of origin.
